Racist: Does it Take One to Know One? “The Jiggaboo Incident”

News Anchor Kristi Capel slipped up this morning live on air and the air waves have been on fire with the “outrage.”

Long version of what was said in context:

Short version:

The offending “Jiggaboo” comment and the on-air apology.

This last bit is an inside joke by her partner, who awhile back became famous for his “skin flute” slip up.

The other guy’s reaction is even better.

Alright hilarious and all… haha. Mega schautenfraude* there. But why bring it up?

Well, it reminds me of quite a few times the media has jumped on people who said things with malice or forethought. In fact, no thought at all.

The media immediately jumps on them as racists or sexists or whatever. Then, if it turns out later it was an honest mistake they’re again attacked for being idiots.

Yet is the media truly being fair? Why are some people left to hang while others get a “pass?” Why are some people attacked as racist, even without intent and others are just ignored or laughed off?

Take for example the stewardess from American Airlines who was sued for rhyming “Eeny Meeny Miney Mo.” No joke. The rhyme 100 years ago used to use “n!**a” instead of “tiger.” How many folks know that? I didn’t. Neither did the stewardess until the lawsuit.

Does that make her racist?

Unintentionally?

How can you be racist if you have no idea it IS racist?

Do you have to be a “little bit racist” to NOT be racist?

Think about it.

If no one were there that KNEW a word was racist and it was said… would it STILL be racist?

If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there, does it make a sound?

If a man is alone in the forest and his wife isn’t there… is he still wrong?

If a space alien came down to Earth and learned English from rap songs… then tried to address African Americans as “Hey my…” well you get the idea… would he be racist?

I’m afraid that sometimes folks see and hear what they want to. If you want to be offended, you’ll find something to offend you, even if it wasn’t intended that way. We’ve all been out with that guy who just wanted to pick a fight and no amount of politeness was going to stop him. He would find an excuse.

Here, I think it’s extremely counter productive.

Meanwhile, if you’re a celebrity of the correct political persuasion… it’s all good. No harm no foul.

Ol’ Joe Biden is the gift that keeps on giving. Yet he’s STILL considered a possibility for the 2016 Presidential Candidate.

Just this last week:

A handful of the cleaner ones Joe has used… some of these blooper reels are 10 minutes long…

Oh don’t feel bad, Kristi. And Wayne. And Joe.

You can still be President of the United States!

George Bush, Jr

Barack Obama, Jr

We all make mistakes.

Why try to make it into more than it is?

I’m actually glad those two news anchors have kept their jobs. Far too many have been fired for less.

Then again, I didn’t think the station would put them BOTH on TOGETHER.

I wonder if people keep the DVR running on that show all morning…just in case?

* schadenfreude = “pleasure at someone else’s expense”

On a less funny note, I ran across this. In debating racism seriously, this could be useful. It is American Racism as Barak Obama sees it, in his own words:
