I think this article can be boiled down to two sentences:
“We applaud the state sheriffs’ association for recognizing that you can’t violate the law to enforce the law,” Ms. Lieberman added.
“Our counsel said you shouldn’t do it, and we don’t,” said Sheriff Barry Virts.
As much as you can claim the Sheriff Dept here is standing up for immigrant rights… it’s more a matter of legalities. They don’t want the hassle of doing the “dirty work” for Border Patrol. Think about it from the Sheriff’s point of view.
Border Patrol says “Go out, get this guy, arrest him, hold him at your expense and we’ll (probably) come to pick him up (eventually.”) Why not do it yourself, Mr. Border Patrol?
Oh, that’s right. You’re short on manpower and cash. You claim you just don’t have the resources to do it!
Funny thing is… neither do we. Unlike YOU, it isn’t the Sheriff’s job to track down illegal immigrants that haven’t committed a crime in the county. Yes, they’re criminals administratively, but what they did illegally immigrating is akin to “trespassing” on a national scale.
It’s not a Felony or even a Misdemeanor. It’s an “administrative penalty.” Even better, the Border Patrol isn’t even prosecuting THOSE most of the time. Does it really make sense to divert deputies off patrol to round up people who haven’t broken the law locally?
What crimes are NOT being prevented by those patrols? Why is it suddenly my county tax money going to this? I’m paying for the Border Patrol to do this… and AGAIN for the State Police (apparently) to do this and now the County patrol to do it as well.
Meanwhile, we’re told that this “isn’t a major national crisis.” Huh. It sure feels like it if my pocket is being picked at least THREE times to find these people.
Way to go, Sheriff Virts. The Border Patrol is NOT your boss. I am. Every tax payer and voter in Wayne County is. WE elected you. WE pay you. You are doing a good job representing US.
Call Border Patrol and tell them:
Don’t call us, we’ll call you.
